Then we increased the number of flaps by subdividing some flaps into smaller flaps using the various point-splitting techniques. While in principle any number of flaps can be attained, point-splitting is inherently a process of reduction; the flaps you end up with are always smaller than what you started with. Thus, there are definite limits on what you can accomplish by point-splitting.
