ABSTRACT

The dose-response relationship deˆnes the functional relation between the exposure concentration received by an organism and the resulting effect caused by the exposure. This relationship has played a major role in the history of toxicology, primarily in the calculation of the median lethal dose (LD50), the dose that causes 50% mortality in a population. The dose-response relationship has a signiˆcant role in the application of modeling to ecotoxicology as well. We can deˆne two types of response: (1) a quantal response, in which the response occurs or it doesn’t (i.e., death), and (2) a graded response in which the magnitude of response increases or decreases as the dose level increases.
