ABSTRACT

In this chapter, two tragic accidents that occurred in 2010 will be discussed, the rst accident is the 2010 San Bruno pipeline explosion, which occurred on September 9, 2010, in San Bruno, California. This event killed at least ve workers and caused more than 40 homes to burn to the ground. The second accident to be discussed is the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This occurred on April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico and continued for three months and was the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The explosion killed 11 platform workers and injured many others. The spill has caused widespread damage to marine and wildlife habitats as well as the Gulf’s shing and tourism industries. The Prevention through Design concept and some related concerns will be discussed. The use of calculus knowledge in design analysis for practical engineering problems will also be discussed.
