ABSTRACT

David Rye tells the story that several years ago, former senator Edward Kennedy was trying to capture the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. During an interview with newsman Roger Mudd, he was asked why he wanted to become the president of the United States. “It wasn’t that he came up with a poor answer, he couldn’t —nd any words at all.”1 It made it seem that he didn’t have a clear sense of purpose or an appropriate motivation. “”e public blasted him and … shortly aŸer the interview, his campaign was disbanded.” ”e hard truth is that we are not much interested in what others want for themselves-we are far more interested in what others can do for us.
