The above advice given to a new employee re©ects the basic fact that while we do not choose our coworkers, we do need to get along with them. What does it take to get along with others? It sometimes is said that three behaviors are key to getting along with others at work: being nice to others, following orders, and doing your job well. ”is advice has a great deal of merit. We all like people who are pleasant, and not following orders will surely get people into trouble. But as the above vignette suggests, being nice does not guarantee that others will also be nice to us. A bit more is oŸen needed.
