ABSTRACT
The introduction of new technology in astronomical instruments has always resulted in important new advances in our knowledge. In the last 50 years, the pace of technological development has been so great as to lead to a revolution in observational capabilities. The development of spaceborne instrumentation, better optics and detectors, and computers has made it possible to create modern telescopes and observatories that have revolutionized our understanding of the Universe.
