ABSTRACT

The very first seed that was planted in my thinking for OLPC came from my dad. He was working second shift as a journeyman mold maker at the Overmyer Mold Company in Winchester, Indiana, in the 1950s. It was a regular occurrence for the family to have dinner together when Dad came home on his dinner break between 7 and 8 p.m. (His normal shift ran from 4:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.) While he hadn’t been to college and was a very average high school student (he didn’t like school), he was smart, a hard worker, and a creative thinker. He saw lots of things that could be done better, and he was often frustrated that his management ignored obvious improvement opportunities and simply coped day after day with dysfunction and inefficiency.
