ABSTRACT

As noted in the other chapters of this book, a number of organic reactions have been modi’ed for use in the undergraduate teaching laboratory in order to incorporate green chemistry principles. Many of these transformations involve the replacement of hazardous reagents with more environmentally friendly substances. These updated experiments can serve as excellent examples to demonstrate how organic reactivity can be made greener. It is important to stress to undergraduates that “greening” a chemical reaction is very much a step-wise process, and that the resulting synthetic methodology will not be perfectly green. In order to incorporate green chemistry into the everyday vocabulary of organic synthesis, chemists must expand the de’nition of green to include any change in a process that results in a more environmentally friendly reaction.
