ABSTRACT

Similar to the 2005 AISC Seismic Provisions, which is referenced in the 2007 IBC, the 2010 edition of AISC 341 is expected to be referenced in the next publication of IBC. Therefore, the seismic design of all steel and composite buildings in the United States will be governed by this document, allowing engineers to develop their designs in a consistent fashion, no matter what the jurisdiction. This should result in improved steel and composite construction throughout the United States and other countries around the world that adopt this standard. Before discussing the AISC Seismic Provisions, it is perhaps instructive to recall the events that occurred right after the Northridge earthquake that have resulted in its extensive revisions.
