ABSTRACT

Structural design is in the period of mixing and perfecting structural systems such as mega frames, interior or exterior super diagonally braced frames, spine wall structures, etc., to name a few. Using this vocabulary and numerous case studies, we introduce the reader to those aspects of conceptualization and engineering judgment that are timeless constants of the design process. These traits can be as important and valuable for understanding structural design as are the latest computer software. The case histories presented in this chapter are based on information contained in various technical publications and periodicals. Frequent use is made of personal information gathered from the structural engineers of record.
