More than a decade ago, Lipnack and Stamps (2000) wrote a book about virtual teams, stressing that they would represent the future of corporate networking and ultimately lead to what they called the “intelligent organization.” e key to this intelligence is shared knowledge. Working in groups can make the most of shared knowledge as shown in Figure 8.1, which is patterned after Hutchins et al.’s (1996) model of collaboration stages and cognitive processes.
