It happened on one of those beautiful late-summer days in 2001: temperatures in the 70s, blue skies, humidity lower than usual, a Tuesday almost midway through September when New Yorkers were adjusting to being back to work after recent summer vacations. In many ways it seemed like a fairly routine day. But nothing that was about to happen was routine.
