ABSTRACT

Promoting research in universities Research and education are meshed together in the world’s major research universities. Mission statements of such universities all emphasize the central role of scientic research in their undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Their campus construction and development projects, faculty hiring and ring policies, and student admission requirements all re¡ect this central role of research in their missions. In this chapter, the aim is to (a) reiterate the view that the very essence of research is all about learning while discovering and discovering while learning, (b) describe the responsibilities of administrative bodies and personnel for promoting research on their campuses, and (c) offer a set of quantiable performance measures that can be applied uniformly to evaluate university researchers in a number of roles they assume in performing their duties. The chapter also describes some of the common mistakes universities can avoid to reduce the risk of inadvertently sti¡ing the very research programs they set out to create and build.
