ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author examines types and natures of information system problems. Differences of opinion over the scope of a system arise in many projects, and this occurs according to the management style and leadership provided by the project’s sponsor and other responsible managers, and depending on how well they assert the scope. Professionals in the field of information technology and knowledge are developing their work within the framework of a young profession with serious difficulties to overcome in the definition and delimitation of their scope of responsibility and a substantial amount of controversy inherent in its ongoing development. A colleague serving as a manager in the factory accompanied the author to a meeting with the director of the bank’s information systems department to assess some qualitative aspects of the upcoming work effort. Any new features and functions must be retrofitted into the analysis and design documentation and included on the software components that comprise the new information system.
