ABSTRACT

Adopting a strategic perspective in project management requires choosing the right evaluation and control approach for each type of project. Classifications are conceptual definitions that aim to simplify the analysis of projects based on the relevance deduced from the repetition of similar projects over time. Making a distinction of information system projects based on nature is like trying to compartmentalize categories that are based along a continuum. Characteristics of both are likely to be found to some extent on both types of projects. Equipment projects are projects that will primarily provide physical facilities and materials intended to improve the work efficiency of equipment users in the organization. Infrastructure projects share a common trait with equipment projects in that the products supplied are generally physical goods and equipment introduced as company assets. Operational projects are those for which the main products, mainly software and services, have a relatively direct and immediate effect on the routine business operations within the organization.
