ABSTRACT

Gravity Concentration is a method of separating the mineral particles based on their specific gravities when they are allowed to settle in a fluid medium. The motion of a particle in a fluid depends not only on its specific gravity but also on its size; large particles will be affected more than smaller ones. Separation of raw coal into different specific gravity fractions and separation of minerals, Ilmenite, Monazite, Rutile, Zircon, Garnet from Beach Sands, are the two important examples for the application of float and sink. The buoyant forces acting on the light particles in a dense medium make them rise to the surface and the dense particles sink to the bottom because of gravity force. The chance cone can be operated as a single gravity separator or a two gravity separator merely by opening or closing the valves controlling the sand and water for lifting the middlings up the column.
