ABSTRACT

The field of forensic dentistry or forensic odontology is that area of dentistry concerned with the correct management, examination, evaluation and presentation of dental evidence in criminal or civil legal proceedings. This discipline of dentistry has existed for many years and practiced by a small number of dedicated clinicians. Within the last twenty years, the idea of becoming involved in the legal aspects of dentistry has become popular among an increasing number of practicing dentists. This is due, in part, to an increasing awareness by both professionals and the lay public of the role that forensic science and forensic dentistry play in the resolution of criminal and civil legal issues. This is best exemplified by noting the membership of the organization sponsoring this manual. The American Society of Forensic Dentistry (ASFO) currently exceeds 1000 members. There were thirty members when ASFO was founded in 1970.
