ABSTRACT

The underlying structural and functional properties of each organ are determined, in part, by the proteins expressed within the cells of each organ system. Gene expression pro ling of both human and animal tissues has increased exponentially, following the completion of genome sequencing of humans and other animal models. Gene expression often re§ects protein expression and these studies have not only greatly improved our understanding of protein expression in cells, but have also improved our understanding of many disease processes.1 However, there are tissues/organs and/or disease states in which messenger RNA (mRNA) levels may not necessarily re§ect protein expression.2-4 Thus, in-depth detection and analysis of protein expression is needed to better understand tissue/organ structure and function.
