ABSTRACT

In 1968, Carlos Suarez published a paper which provided information from Pitman-Moore miniature pigs with respect to renal similarities to the kidneys of humans, primates and other mammals (Suarez et al., 1968). Much information was available for large pigs, but this was one

of the ¢rst attempts to determine whether the characteristics of minipigs were similar to those of the larger pigs. Suarez reported that comparison of several aspects of renal function between the two strains of pig demonstrated no appreciable differences. This comparison included clearance measurements, electrolyte excretion, urineconcentrating capacity and solute excretion, proteinuria, blood and plasma concentration and the ¢ne structure of the nephron.
