ABSTRACT

Swine are a useful alternative to typical nonrodent species for the conduct of biology and toxicology studies. Swine have contributed signi¢cantly to a number of scienti¢c disciplines, including the immunology of xenotransplantation, cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology, and cutaneous biology because of their striking similarities with humans. Studies involving Sinclair miniature swine that spontaneously develop melanoma coupled with a sound understanding of pig lymph node anatomy have been important in

delineating the biology and diagnosis of metastatic neoplastic disease (Johnson et al., 1996).
