ABSTRACT

Children with intestinal failure (IF) may require admission to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at various times during their illness course. With the advent of intestinal and multivisceral transplants at major centers in the United States, pediatric intensivists will frequently care for patients with intestinal and liver failure. More than 200 intestinal transplants are performed in the United States every year (Organ Procurement and Transplantation Website: https://www.optn.org/latestData/ step2.asp), and many children are listed and awaiting transplantation in various stages of their illness. Table 18.1 describes the common scenarios when patients with IF require admission to the PICU.
