ABSTRACT

Intravenous lipid emulsions (ILE) have been considered a standard and critical component of parenteral nutrition (PN). ILE consist of triglycerides, egg phospholipids, and glycerin. ILE provide an energy-dense source of calories and essential fatty acids (EFA), linoleic and α-linolenic acid, that are required for the synthesis of the important lipid mediators such as eicosanoids, for the synthesis of lipid rafts involved in cell membrane signaling and other key cellular functions.
