ABSTRACT

Many human factors design guidelines are fairly broad, allowing a wide variety of latitude in their implementation. The situation awareness (SA) design principles presented here are probably no exception. In addition, as new technologies develop, solid research on the best way to design their features to enhance SA and human performance will generally lag signi”cantly. These factors lead to a design solution that is often not fully deterministic. Many different design concepts may be considered and designers will need to be able to sort out which are better and which may lead to problems in actual use. Questions may remain in the designer’s mind as to the best way to do something. Designers often may be surprised to ”nd that certain design features do not work as well as anticipated. The objective evaluation of system design features, therefore, forms the third major building block of SA-Oriented Design.
