Now that we understand what user-centered design is, we need to look more closely at the meaning of the term situation awareness (SA). This chapter may be more theoretical than you would expect in a book about designing systems, but in order to better understand what we are trying to achieve, a thorough understanding of how SA is developed in the mind is necessary. This chapter will provide you with a sound foundation from which we can develop principles for designing systems that will support and enhance SA.
