ABSTRACT

Before a system can be designed to support situation awareness (SA), the designer must develop a clear understanding as to what supporting SA means in a particular domain. This understanding can be gained through a form of cognitive task analysis called a goal directed task analysis (GDTA). A GDTA focuses on the goals the operator must accomplish in order to successfully perform the job, the decisions he/she must make to achieve the goals, and the information requirements that are needed in order to make appropriate decisions.
