ABSTRACT

The genus Veronaea is a dematiaceous mold belonging to the mitosporic Herpotrichiellaceae group, family Herpotrichiellaceae, order Chaetothyriales, class Eurotiomycetes, subphylum Pezizomycotina, phylum Ascomycota, kingdom Fungi. The mitosporic Herpotrichiellaceae group consists of 13 genera: Blastacervulus, Brycekendrickomyces, Cladophialophora, Cladoriella, Cyphellophora, Exophiala, Heteroconium, Melanchlenus, Metulocladosporiella, Phaeococcomyces, Rhinocladiella, Thysanorea, and Veronaea. In turn, the genus Veronaea is separated into three species: Veronaea botryosa (obsolete synonyms: Veronaea coprophila and Sympodina coprophila), Veronaea compacta, and Veronaea japonica [1-3]. A former Veronaea species, that is, Veronaea musae (obsolete synonym: Ramichloridium musae), is now known as Periconiella musae. The type species of the genus is Veronaea botryosa, which was –rst identi–ed in 1957 from olive slag in Italy and which is the only Veronaea species implicated in human infection.
