ABSTRACT

The yeasts of the genus Cryptococcus are spheroidal, ovoidal, or elongate in shape, and reproduce mainly by multilateral budding. Key characteristics of the genus are the ability to assimilate inositol as sole carbon source, produce urease, react with diazonium blue B, and the lack of fermentative ability. Most of the isolates have a glucoronoxylomannan (GXM) capsule that differs in size according to the strain or to environmental factors [1].
