ABSTRACT

The phylum Zygomycota consists of two classes: the Trichomycetes and the Zygomycetes. Members of the Trichomycetes are obligate symbiotes of arthropods. Zygomycetes are divided into two orders: Mucorales and Entomophthorales (Ancylistaceae, Basidiobolaceae), which contain the human pathogens Basidiobolus and Conidiobolus. Production of actively expelled asexual sporangioles is a unique characteristic and distinguishes Entomophthorales from the Mucorales.
