ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the groups of organisms (plants and animals) that form the major components of inland aquatic ecosystems. Dispersal mechanisms are discussed, as well as isolation, geographical distribution and factors that limit or control the diversity of aquatic biota. Information is presented on the overall diversity of the genera and species of the different groups.
