In this chapter rivers are presented as aquatic ecosystems with permanent water fl ow and also permanent (and intense) interactions with the basins in which they operate. Benthic invertebrates and fi sh dominate river fauna. The aquatic biota in these lotic systems are adapted to the unidirectional fl ow of the water and to the structure, type and chemical composition of the bottom sediment.
