ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the distribution and functioning mechanisms of wetlands, temporary lakes, and saline lakes.
Wetland areas are found on all continents and coastal regions. They are ecotones that have important quantitative effects on hydrological cycles and biodiversity. They function as important regulatory systems in biogeochemical cycles.
