ABSTRACT

The €rst step in most traditional accident prevention programs has been to look at information to determine where the industry or company appears to be having problems. Collecting and analyzing data is a €rst step in €nding out what is going on, and it makes good sense to begin at this point. Because it prepares for the main course of analysis, this procedure is called a Preliminary Data Analysis (PDA). Two techniques for performing this analysis are presented in this chapter; they are the Physical Barrier Analysis (PBA) and the Human Barrier Analysis (HBA) (see Figure 11.1). These techniques result in two distinct considerations:

1. The thought process or way of thinking about the data to get usable information from it

2. The mechanics of documenting the results of that thinking in the form of organizers, tally sheets, etc.
