ABSTRACT

Scientific Name: Malpighia emarginata DC. (“M. punicifolia,” “M. glabra,” not M. glabra L.)

• The English “acerola” is based on the American Spanish word acerola used for the same plant, which in turn is based on the Spanish azarole, referring to a quite different species, the azarole (Crataegus azarolus L.), which has berries of similar appearance.
