ABSTRACT

Akee is an evergreen tree growing to 20 m (66 ft.) in height, but usually 8 to 15 m (26-49 ft.) high. It is native to the forests of the Ivory Coast and Gold Coast of tropical West Africa. Akee attains its greatest gastronomic popularity in Jamaica, the only country where it is a major food crop. Trees were also established in most of the other Caribbean islands, such as Trinidad, Grenada, Antigua, and Barbados, as well as Florida, Central America, South America, and elsewhere, but the fruits are only occasionally harvested for food outside of Jamaica.
