Good Hope at least by the early nineteenth century. The word “gooseberry” in its name does not re§ect any relationship with the true gooseberry. “Gooseberry” has also been used to label other fruits quite unrelated to the true gooseberry; for example, the “Chinese gooseberry” was the original name of the kiwi (see Chapter 53).
