ABSTRACT

Note: Most literature treats kiwifruit as one species, A. deliciosa. However, Liang and Ferguson (1986) assigned some cultivated varieties marketed today to a second species, A. chinensis Planch. According to Ferguson (2008), the cultivar ‘Hayward’, supplying 80% of the world market, belongs to A. deliciosa, whereas approximately 8% of marketed fruit (currently from China and New Zealand) is from A. chinensis. The two species have different wild geographical ranges in China, but in the marketplace the distinctions are of interest mainly to fruit specialists.
