ABSTRACT

When the damping ratio is small that can be modeled by Timoshenko damping (see Equation 1.227) and when the damping can be approximated as linear viscous damping, a linear approach can be used to simplify the damping design when the base structure is designed to be primarily within the elastic range. In this section, three design phases are described and step-by-step procedures are given for the MSSP model, the proportionally and generally damped systems, respectively. The design is based on spectral analysis, rather than time history computations.
