ABSTRACT

In this study, we consider the optimal way to manufacture a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCN). While there are many different types of nanoparticles, the focus of this chapter is on SWCN, which are a type of rolled carbon. Similar to how the molecular organization of carbon in diamonds versus graphite produces very different results, so too does this organization matter for nanomaterials. These nanotubes express extraordinary mechanical strength and contain differing electric properties (Healy et al. 2008; Şengül et al. 2008). These properties suggest applications in areas ranging from structural polymers, to supercapacitors, and to sensors and batteries (Healy et al. 2008). Currently, carbon nanotubes represent a burgeoning industry valued in the range of millions to billions of dollars (Healy et al. 2008).
