ABSTRACT

In 2007, two social scientists set out on a journey to empirically assess Compstat’s police performance management system. Our research is the —rst scienti—c study to unveil what has been occurring behind NYPD closed doors for many years. Our study reveals the aura of Compstat for what it is-a human innovation with strengths and weaknesses. Compstat as an innovation is a success; however, like any human creation, it is not perfect.
