ABSTRACT

An air-cooled water chiller must be located outdoors to use atmospheric air as its heat sink. While some have designed outdoor chillers with a ducted air intake and/or discharge for indoor installation, these designs generally have failed dismally. Location and installation of an air-cooled chiller must address the following considerations:

1. Prevent recirculation of discharge air by locating the chiller with sufŒ- cient clearance to adjacent buildings, shrubbery, and other equipment to allow unobstructed air movement into and out of the condenser section. Discharge air is obviously warmer than ambient air and, if it allowed to recirculate and enter the condenser, chiller capacity is reduced.
