ABSTRACT
Prior to Ford’s assembly lines, the car, or boat, or whatever you were building, did not move. It stayed in one spot, a bay, while everything was brought to it. Since the car was not moving, there was no sense of urgency during the build process. œe worker tended to be a highly skilled craµsman who had to know how to build the car start to nish. High-volume mass production was not possible because:
• It took a long time for one worker to build an entire car. • œere were not that many skilled workers to go around. • To build many cars at once would require entire duplicate sets of
tools, xtures, jigs, etc., at each bay.
