ABSTRACT

Gaseous fuels are the easiest fuels to utilize in furnaces and boilers. No fuel preparation is necessary, the gases mix easily with air, combustion proceeds rapidly, and emissions are low compared to liquid and solid fuels. The drawbacks are that gaseous fuels can be expensive and they may not be available, particularly if a natural gas pipeline hookup is not available. Because gaseous fuels are convenient to use, they are well suited for small combustion systems such as residential, commercial, and small industrial space heating furnaces and boilers. Electric utility generating stations and district heating plants use natural gas or syngas to meet peak load demands.
