ABSTRACT

Fluidized bed combustion is the third type of approach for utilizing solid fuels. Historically, –xed bed combustors were developed –rst, followed by suspension burning systems, and more recently by ¢uidized bed systems. Which of the three types of systems to select depends on the type and size of the solid fuel and the end use. In general ¢uidized beds have been used for crushed coal where some sulfur capture is required but a ¢ue gas scrubber is not desired, and for biomass fuels that are too big for suspension –ring or too variable in size or moisture for grate –ring.
