ABSTRACT

Understanding the effects and problems associated with manual material handling (MMH) of heavy loads is critical to task design in such environments. Factors such as physical strength, fatigue, temperature, slopes, and load all affect the ef€ciency and safety of the tasks. Long-term health risks, primarily musculoskeletal disorders, are common performance in such task. Mitigating risks associated with these types of physically intensive tasks includes understanding how to use evaluation tools such as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) lifting guideline worker limitations and effective task design.
