ABSTRACT

Nutrition recommendations for the public now include n-3 FA and  sh intake, not only to prevent de ciency because n-3 FA are essential, but also to obtain the cardiovascular and other healthrelated bene ts (Riediger et al., 2009). In this regard, the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), used in both Canada and the United States, indicate a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for n-3 FA of 1.6 g/day for males and 1.1 g/day for females; the type of n-3 FA is not distinguished (National Academy of Sciences, 2005). Furthermore, Canada’s Food Guide, released in 2007, and the American Heart Association Nutrition Committee recommends consuming at least two meals containing  sh per week, especially oily  sh (Lichtenstein et al., 2006). Efforts are now being made to establish separate DRI recommendations for EPA and DHA; available literature supports a DRI of 500 mg/day for EPA and DHA (Harris et al., 2009).
