ABSTRACT
R is a name used to refer to a language, a development environment, as well as an integrated suite of software routines that allow efficient data manipulations, calculations, and graphical display. The R language can be regarded as an open source implementation of the S language developed at Bell Laboratories by Rick Becker, John Chambers, and Allan Wilks. S subsequently evolved into S-PLUS, which was for a long time a preferred choice for commercial data analysis software. Since both S-PLUS and R evolved from S, R, and S-PLUS are closely related.
