ABSTRACT

The primary aim of writing this book was to synthesise the enormous and disparate material on the subject of food security. This was embarked upon, not so much in attempt to provide solutions, but rather to present a solid foundation on which a full overarching understanding of the modern notion can be reasonably achieved. In this undertaking, the book has ¡irted with a multitude of diverse disciplines. These have included science, economics, politics and philosophy among others and, in this endeavour, it has been part theoretical, part conceptual, but all the time thoroughly pragmatic. It is worth noting too that in touching upon so many fields, I have sometimes only been able to offer small glimpses into multiple complex areas that surround an inherently difficult subject to navigate. However, despite these limitations, it is hoped that the underpinning knowledge provided in this book can act as a springboard, from which more specialised esoteric knowledge can be sought, to aid in further navigation of the various threads.
