ABSTRACT

Within the framework of the Sixth Phase of the International Hydrological Programme of UNESCO (IHP-VI, 2002-2007), one of the urban water projects under IHP-VI Focal Area 3.5 ‘Urban Areas and Rural Settlements’ was dedicated to socioeconomic and institutional aspects in urban water management. The first meeting of the project implementation was held at UNESCO in Paris in March 2002, which defined the thematic framework of the project and topics to be addressed, and established a Taskforce on Urban Water Conflicts (also called the urban water conflicts group) to facilitate project implementation. The Taskforce held several meetings over the period 2002 to 2006 to develop key issues linked with water-related conflicts in urban settings.
