The status of modeling software for salt cavern leaching, identification of some unsolved problems and investigation of few of their aspects

Numerical simulation of leaching processes has a

history of more than 45 years. The use of salt cav-

erns for underground storage purpose initiated and

stimulated this development in an extraordinary

way. Although, caverns have been used for salt pro-

duction already for a long time, this was realised ba-

sically without a targeted control of the subsurface

processes and without sufficient knowledge of the

underlying theoretical principles.
