ABSTRACT

Insects like the Cecropia moth can locate mates and food sources at distances of up to seven miles with highly sensitive chemical-detecting antennas. We have learned a great deal from

Biochemical Surveillance

studying and trying to reproduce natural chemical detection systems. Chemical and biological surveillance are technical fields-much of the research is labora-

tory work on a microscopic scale, sometimes in sterile or carefully monitored environments. Gradually, portable ‘minilabs’ are being developed for work in the field, but the results of onsite analyses may have to be double-checked or given to further analysis by a specialist in a lab.
